A new beginning - The Witchling Handler

As some of you might know, something terrible has happened. Photobucket has become a paid service, which means I won't be using it any more. Google, however, remains a free hosting platform, and this is great news for our blog. From here on out, I will be posting all my miniature pictures through the 'bitter old painters' blogspot. I still won't be posting regular updates or long walls of text, but there will generally be a steady inflow of new miniature pictures from me. I am not sure if every picture will be acompanied by an update, but at least my gallery will start to grow from here on out.

And as every new beginning has to start somewhere, I herby present you with 'The Witchling Handler'. I loved painting this model so much, that I tried a few new techniques on her. Most notably are the purple tinted shadows, which really helps the red coat pop. I am very proud of this piece, and I can't wait to get going on the next malifaux miniature.

Now, back to painting.

Another take on the Daemon Prince...

I've been getting some feedback on Bolter & Chainsword, and someone told me that while he was cool, "I could do better", and that he didn't really look like a Death Guard DP, more like a Nurgle DP. I took the comments to heart, and decided to try another take. This time, in Power armour.

Let me know what you think. :)

Update: I've added a sketch to show an idea for my scratch built legs - underneath the sketch, the wireframe and the green stuff base can be seen.

Tweaking the Dreadnought a bit...

Hi guys - not much progress on the Daemon Prince, since I still can't get the lower body to click - I've ordered some legs from a bits site, so I'll see if that works out, when they show up.

Anyway, a buddy at my local gaming club looked at the Nurgle Dreadnought while I was working on some other things (I have this habit of lining up the models I'm working on, so I can constantly check if the look and feel of the miniatures match each other), and he commented that it is so much bigger than a normal dreadnought, that I should use it as a Hellforged Contemptor - it also has longer legs, etc... I thought about it for a bit, and I think it's a great idea; I like the thought of it being a bit more elite than a standard Helbrute, and especially reading up on the fluff of it, him not being driven insane, having him actually being a great champion of Nurgle, instead of a raving lunatic.

Reading the rules, however, this posed a problem - Contemptors can't take a missile launcher for an arm. I pondered about it a bit, and decided that he should have a Butcher Cannon instead; this also allows me to play it as a standard dreadnought with auto cannon, should my opponent refuse to use FW rules. I spent some time tinkering with how to turn my missile launcher into a Butcher Cannon arm (not wanting to screw up my previous work too much, and really liking the stubby arm aesthetic of the missile pod), and I came up with simply stuffing some auto cannons into the pod, cutting away a little material and mounting the ammo drums, and using some chaos vehicle chains to bulk the barrels up a bit - they looked a bit weedy at the bottom, without the chains.

I think it worked out pretty cool, but let me know what you think. :)

Daemon Prince progress...

A bit of progress on the Daemon Prince - I got an idea last night, looking at a pink horror mouth, and I did some greenstuffing and ended up with something I actually really like for the head.

I'm trying out a third option for the lower body - something more creepy, mechanic and insectile:

As always, let me know what you think. :)

The walking pox...

Hi guys - I've managed to get all my 20 pox walkers ready for paint. I couldn't resist getting the 6 man quick assemble box too, and I realised that with a few small conversions and the 6 additional guys, I had an opportunity to have 20 unique models - so thats what I did. I also removed almost every single horn on the pox walkers, since I disliked them - it gives them IMO an odd silhouette, and takes away from the creepiness of them. This I like much better. To hide the cuts, and give some extra texture, I glued on some micro beads from a Brita water filter. Great stuff for Nurgle, but it sure is a bitch to separate the beads from the active carbon they're mixed with. If anybody has any tips for an easy way to do it, I'm all ears. :)

Anyway, here they are:

Something new, something old, something rotten, something cold...

Hi guys - since the Dropbox debacle of march 2017, I've been really bitter about it - all my pics of all my projects, have been little red x's in every forum, blog and post on the web. I couldn't really find the motivation to get them up again, but a lot of you guys all over the forums have been asking, and I thought that I should get myself together and do something about it. I won't be able to reupload every single link to the forums, but I thought that I'd at least reupload the pictures of the projects here on the Bitter Old Painters blog. So, here they are - most of what I've been doing with grey plastic for the past 8 years, are collected in the new and improved...

Something wicked this way comes...

I'll just leave this hanging for now...

(very rough mockup - the head is just a placeholder, and I'm wondering if he should have legs or a "skirt")

Update! I'm on fire here:

What do you think of the lower body? To Mechanicus for Nurgle?

Update #2:

Another idea for the lower body:

Some ideas for the head:

Some minor Plague Marine conversions...

Hi guys - today I'm showing off some minor plague marine conversions I've done. Since I got my hands on 2 sets of the Nurgle part of the starter set, I wanted to do some conversions - I'm not a fan of all the miniatures, and I wanted to do some tweaks. This way, when the (hopefully) 10 man multi part plague marine kit comes out, I have 11 marines already, giving me a grand total of three 7 man units - with no duplicates.

Without further ado, here they are:

First off - I really really hated the sorcerer. In my opinion, it's just a straight out horrible miniature. Kraut Scientist (of Eternal Hunt fame) seems to have made it right somehow, but from the first time I saw the Champion of the Plague Marine unit, I thought he'd make a much better sorcerer. Very simple conversion, just a few arm swaps (with a staff from the Blight Kings kit):

Also since I've got 2 Noxious Blightbringers, and doubt that I'll be using even one, I thought he is a great miniature, and with the addition of a power fist and the arm from the "grenade guy", he looks like an awesome champion. I also disliked the weird horns on the guy on the left, so I scraped them off, and reposed his left arm in a more dynamic open position:

Next up is my second plasma gunner, using the arms from the bolter "duplicate guy", so they would have different shoulder pads, and a head swap - I really prefer the MkIII helmets. The other guy is made using a leftover belly plate and the legs from the sorcerer, scraped free from the insect stuff - not sure about the head though:

Last up is my second champion, just a simple matter of grinding away the hooded head (still needs some greenstuff touchups), and putting on a disgusting, bloated bare head (I think it is an alternative head from the Glottkin kit). The last guy, on the right, is made using another "duplicate marine" body, the sorcers shoulder pads, a bolter scraped free from the left hand, the torso from the sorcerer, and a head from the blight kings. I really like this one:

Pondering the colour scheme for my new Death Guard...

Hi guys - I've made two testers for my new Death Guard army, and I'm kind of torn between the green one, which is new to me, and the white one, which is a variant of the old one - which should I go for?

(obviously, details aren't done yet.)

Update: I've tweaked them both a bit - still very much in doubt; the white one is most clearly visible on the table, while I think it's a bit flat/boring when closely inspected. The green one is the opposite.

The tweaks I've made are some washes used a glazes, trying to get some warm and cool colours into the armour, and lightening the green one a bit.

Oh, and I managed to start a crazy conversion tonight, an idea that has been brewing in my head for some time - a BlightFiend! (Nurgle Forge Fiend)
